During 2006 Salvitas Consulting assisted Surface Technology in the building of a new electroplating and phosphating process line. In order to build the new plant space had to be made and this involved reclaiming two disused chemical pits. Salvitas handled the health and safety issues surrounding the emptying and filling of the storage pits which had held Cyanide and Chrome solution.
There were various issues to consider such as working at height and how access would be gained for workmen into the pit safely. Once the risk assessments had been carried out a safe system of work was agreed with the staff, levels of oxygen were checked in the pits and forced ventilation was used to ensure a constant stream of fresh air was present during the work so no threat of asphyxiation could occur. All staff were issued with appropriate PPE and constant supervision was present to monitor the air quality with in the pits. In case of emergency specialist lifting equipment was present to lift clear any member of staff should they of been rendered incapable of climbing out by themselves. The job went well and the pits were cleaned out and filled enabling the finished plant to be built.
